What to include in a first message

A message with the following details can usually be answered substantively on the first reply, without a round of clarifying questions.

  • The outcome you needDescribed in operational terms — what should be possible afterwards that is not possible now.

  • ConstraintsDeadlines, budget boundaries, regulatory or data-protection requirements, and any technology that must be kept or avoided.
  • Current painWhat breaks, what takes too long, or what cannot be answered with the information available today.
